About the Project
Learning spaces for The Kinkaid School’s new 200,000-sf high school were reimagined, creating a timeless look for an avant-garde campus that supports wellness, innovation, and community. As Houston’s oldest independent coed school, Kinkaid entrusted the team to design an environment that honors its legacy while preparing students for the future.
21st-Century Learning Spaces: The campus embraces student-centered learning, moving beyond the traditional “sage on the stage” model. Spaces including the lobby, student centers, alumni center, library, corridors, boardroom, administration areas, and café support multiple modes of learning, gathering, and collaboration. Drawing from their experience designing innovative Silicon Valley workplaces and hospitality-driven food and beverage environments, they created distinctive spaces and flexible furnishings. Clever strategies deliver a hospitality-esque school using durable, economical materials, allowing these spaces to look elevated while respecting cost constraints.
Two student centers serve as dynamic hubs that shift seamlessly from performance venue to casual gathering space or structured collaboration zone. Enclosed rooms support focused study, while open areas invite spontaneous interaction. The design acknowledges that learning, collaboration, and friendships develop in many ways, positioning these centers as anchors of student life and catalysts for connection.
Design for Serendipity, Wellness, and Discovery: Learning extends beyond classrooms into activated lobbies, outdoor loggias, and hallways. Seating niches, abundant whiteboards and pin-up surfaces, and flexible elements such as movable walls encourage informal learning and unscripted discovery. Fluid, serpentine floor plans in the library and student centers promote movement and interaction. Biophilic strategies, including integrated greenery and plentiful daylight, soften the architecture and reinforce comfort and wellness.
Community-Centered Design: Community spaces blur the boundary between school and hospitality space. The Boardroom pairs formal meeting functions with residential-style seating and a kitchen, while the Alumni Center and Café support events and connections across students, families, faculty, and alumni.
Client Statement
[The architect] has been a visionary, brilliant partner, and what a legacy project for you and all of us. Their contributions to the project were immense. We are forever grateful. The building is a triumph! Thank you for your partnership, diligence, and expertise. Everyone is in awe of the design and the details. Every time I do a tour (and I probably have done 50+ by now) the people comment on the dedication to the quality and detail.
