Forums Project Tour
Please join IIDA’s Northern California chapter for an exclusive tour of the newly constructed T1C, not yet open to the public! We will be touring Harvey Milk Terminal 1 new south check-in lobby. The new south check-in lobby has a post-security connector to Boarding Area C. After the tour we will be joined by some members of the design team to dive in deeper to the design of this incredible new space.
The project tour will be hosted on Harvey Milk’s remembrance day. Maps and more detailed instructions will be sent to the attendees that RSVP.

San Francisco International Airport’s (SFO) Harvey Milk Terminal 1 is a ground-up reconstruction project. The design evokes the excitement of air travel while demonstrating SFO’s commitment to sustainability. With the smart application of green practices and materials, the airport earned its designation as the world’s first LEED Platinum v4 terminal.
Project Background
The first phase of Harvey Milk Terminal 1 at SFO opened in July 2019 and included nine departure gates, concessions, and the check-in lobby. The second phase in May 2021 included seven departure gates, a new post-security connector to the International Terminal, a new museum gallery, and a new display of exhibit content honoring the life and legacy of Harvey Milk.

She specializes in design and stakeholder management including architecture, passenger experience, concessions, amenities, and the integration of sustainability, art enrichment, and innovative technology into overall project design. Farrah is a leader in establishing the Airport’s vision and ensuring its achievement throughout the life of a project.

Anthony Bernheim, FAIA, LEED Fellow, is the Healthy and Resilient Buildings Program Manager at San Francisco International Airport, leading the Net Zero Energy and the Commissioning, Activation, & Simulation programs. On the forefront of sustainability, resilience, and regeneration, Anthony is a visionary and respected leader in energy efficient, decarbonized, and high-performance buildings. As early as the 1980’s he has devoted his career to reducing the impact of the built environment on global and human health.

Katy Mercer, IIDA brings over 20 years of experience practicing architecture and interior design both locally and internationally. As a Principal and Regional Interior Design Leader, Katy leads a team of talented designers that cultivate ideas, promote design excellence and champion unique processes. She is invested in a human-centered design experience for her clients and their businesses. Katy has worked on a variety of project types throughout her career including aviation, workplace interiors, higher education, hospitality and high-end residential. Her most recent focus blurs hospitality, residential and workplace influences across all sectors to create a meaningful and memorable experience for the user. Katy received her Bachelor in Architecture from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo with international studies in Florence, Italy. She currently holds a position on San Francisco International Airport’s Design Review Committee and is the President of the Internation Interior Design Association Northern California Chapter.

An Aviation Leader with a background in retail design, Ryan has designed some of Gensler’s most notable experience-driven projects. He strives to bridge the gap between culture and technology to ultimately create community-centered spaces that incorporate the best ideas across project types. An organized thinker and communicator, Ryan’s ability to relate concepts and ideas visually ensure that unique design can become a reality. Ryan is a regular speaker and panelist and has authored numerous blogs and articles on the topic of human-centered design. In 2014, he was selected as one of VMSD Magazine’s “Designer Dozen,” which highlights up-and-coming designers under the age of 35. He holds a Bachelor of Architecture degree from California Polytechnic State University.
