The IIDA Northern California Chapter Honor Awards aims to encourage new ideas and techniques in the design and furnishing of interior spaces. The Honor Awards program focuses on recognizing and honoring outstanding interior design completed by firms within the Northern California Chapter. HEAL | Where we flourish
hospitals, medical facilities, clinics, assisted living, laboratories

JEWELBOX | Where we indulge
retail, wellness, hospitality, healthcare, and other experiential destinations on a smaller, more intimate scale. Projects under 5,000 usable square feet

LIVE | Anyplace we call home
homes, condominiums, townhouses, apartments, mobile homes or houseboats (full or partial renovations acceptable)

PLAY | Where we entertain ourselves
hotels, restaurants, theaters, spas, casinos, stores, showrooms, malls, tasting rooms, sports arenas

For each of the following supplemental awards, enter the project selecting the most appropriate category above. Additional information will be required for selected categories.

LONG VIEW | Achievement in Sustainable Design
The award honors long-lasting, sustainable designs and projects with minimal environmental impact. Include applicable information about the extraordinary solutions (beyond code requirements) that encourage reuse, avoid landfills, and improve environmental wellbeing.

CRAFT | Achievement in Custom Design
This award recognizes an outstanding creative collaboration between the designer and craftsperson/fabricator. Entrees may include but are not limited to such functional or decorative elements as ceilings, stairways, wall treatments, work settings, furniture and lighting. 

SUMMIT | Achievement in Partnership
This award celebrates success, promotes best practices and acknowledges the efforts of teams that create extraordinary designs through the power of their collaboration.

Joshua Bridie

Joshua Bridie is the founder of Three Rules, a consultancy specializing in the experiential design of brand, workplace, hospitality, and home. With a Master of Architecture from Washington University in St. Louis, Josh has nearly three decades of design experience across various industries. His primary focus has been on corporate workplace design for some of the world’s largest companies, including roles as project and design director at both HOK and Gensler, and as the Director of Global Interior Design at Google. Josh’s current “Three Rules” are to 1) surround himself with beauty, 2) work only with like-minded people, and 3) only take on projects that bring him joy.

Catherine Johnson, AIA, ACLA, NCARB

Catherine Johnson, AIA, is the Co-founder and CEO of Design, Bitches, an award-winning architecture and interior design studio. She leads the firm’s Bay Area expansion, established in 2024, and focuses on creating spaces that challenge assumptions and foster connection. A Bay Area native, she’s passionate about protecting California’s native wildlife and habitats. Catherine is a founding member of the University of Oregon Interior Architecture Advisory Council and has served as a visiting critic and lecturer at institutions including USC, UCLA, and Sci-Arc. She holds an M.Arch from Sci-Arc and a B.I.Arch from the University of Oregon.

Jonathan Lopez

Global Senior Director, Design & Creative Services

Jonathan Lopez is an industry leader in architecture, brand strategy, interiors and design. Jonathan is the Global Sr. Director of Design and Creative Services at Gap Inc. His diverse background infuses a multi-disciplinary approach to challenge the constraints of conventional typologies. His work has been recognized with more than 75 local, national and international design awards.
Jonathan holds a Bachelor of Architecture from California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo. He taught architectural design as an adjunct professor at Orange Coast College and serves as a guest design critic at Cal Poly and CSU Long Beach.

Virginia San Fratello

Rael San Fratello
San Francisco Bay Area

Virginia San Fratello is an architect, designer and educator. She is a partner at Rael San Fratello, the Forust Corporation and in Emerging Objects, which is a pioneering design and research company that specializes in 3D printed materials and objects for the built environment based in Oakland, California. San Fratello is the chair of the Department of Design at San Jose State University. She holds a Master of Architecture degree from Columbia University in the City of New York.
In her practice, Virginia focuses on the convergence of digital, ecological, and creative material explorations. Her research is applied through designing and fabricating innovative buildings and their components, furniture elements, and site-specific installations that often look at inherent material resources and have embedded political consequences.

Peter Harrison is a nationally recognized Next Generation Leader in the built environment, known for his work in interior design, sustainability, and workplace culture. From award-winning projects like PDX Airport to thought leadership featured in The Wall Street Journal, he bridges people (culture), place (design), and purpose (sustainability). With experience at Gensler, ZGF, & BRIC Architecture he has shaped inclusive workplaces for global brands including Nike, Apple, and Intel, as well as community-driven spaces like the Marie Equi Center for LGBTQ+ Health. As IIDA Oregon President, he champions radical belonging—believing empathy, joy, and innovation are key to great design and a more sustainable, people-centered future.
