The 2023 Honor Awards was open to design firms of all sizes, focus, and interest practicing in the IIDA Northern California region of Northern California. Submissions were judged for suitability to the project challenge, originality of the design solution, and the successful integration of interior forms, finishes and furnishings. From the qualifying entries, one Honor Award was awarded in each category and winners were publicly announced at the awards ceremony on Thursday, March 23rd.

Susan Chang is an architect, interior designer, builder and workplace strategist extraordinaire. Her ability to identify and understand the nuances of a client’s needs borders on the psychic. In 2000, she and Joey Shimoda founded Shimoda Design Group in an industrial warehouse loading dock in the artist district of Los Angeles. The firm grew steadily gaining a reputation for innovative workplace interiors, history-conscious building renovations, and bold, forward-looking creative mixed-use campuses. In 2016 she was nationally recognized by Interior Design Magazine as the “HiP” Leader in workplace. Susan is also a vintage car enthusiast, amateur dog groomer and budding golfer.

Enthusiasm, curiosity and always challenging the existing – this is Joerns way to develop the global work environment concept at adidas AG. The space is made tangible in its holistic dimension based on people’s needs, perspectives and social connections. In doing so, the great whole as well as the loving detail combined with the perspective of the future are the relentless drivers. His work is reflecting the deep impression of the architectural education at the Bauhaus in Dessau and various leading responsibilities either for global projects in the automotive industry or in the development and realization of spatial worlds.

Hallie Terzopolos

Hallie Terzopolos is an Associate and Co-Director of Interiors with over 15 years of experience in cultural, installation, residential and luxury hospitality design. Prior to joining Olson Kundig in 2019, Hallie worked in New York City with Diller Scofidio + Renfo and the Rockwell Group on a variety of projects, including Lincoln Center renovations, and reimagining the fitness brand Equinox for the hospitality market. Since joining the firm, she has led interior architectural design for a range of hospitality projects across the United States and Europe.

Danilo Lucii

Danilo is an award-winning design leader with over 15 years of experience in architecture and design. Spending his early professional years working in Italy, Danilo relocated to Beijing in 2011, where he was exposed to an extensive range and scale of projects, spanning from master-planning to workplace, hospitality, retail and residential interior. He moved to Singapore in 2017, where he was engaged to initiate and lead the JLL Design Solutions team in creative, technical, and sustainable design. As Design Director, he took the lead in design services providing strategic thinking, creative directions and empowering teams to create their own impactful ways to solve design challenges and see creative opportunities. Landed in New York to expand JLL Design Solutions creative platform within New York and the Tri-State region.

A trained architect, Danilo also believes that good interior design is not only about planning the interior space, but it is also about understanding the building structure and integrating the exterior surroundings. Apart from all these, his personality tends to create strong customer relationships, understanding their needs presenting design concepts and services.

Richard J McConkey

Richard is founder of A Studio Between, a London-based studio working between Interiors and Architecture, Furniture and Art practice to create personal, impactful and beautiful spaces for living.

As former Head of Hospitality at Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby’s Universal Design Studio, Richard has designed and delivered award-winning projects for global clients such as Villa Copenhagen, Frieze Art Fair, Mulberry, Ace Hotel & At Six in Stockholm. Richard has served on design juries and judging panels for the IOC, the Ahead awards, EHL, and has lectured internationally on themes such as hospitality, individuality & uniqueness in design.

Now as founder of bespoke practice A Studio Between, Richard is developing a studio that is original, open and quietly radical in its approach. Currently working across hospitality, residential and arts projects in Europe, UK & the US, the studio is focusing on delivering deeply crafted, personal and people-focused responses to place.
