About the Project
Located in an Art Deco landmark in downtown Minneapolis—originally constructed as the Farmers & Mechanics Savings Bank in 1942—Stock & Bond reimagines a historic banking hall as a bold, contemporary steakhouse. The design honors the building’s legacy while introducing a refined dining experience rooted in craftsmanship, innovation, and local artistry.
The renovation set out to both revitalize one of Minneapolis’s most iconic architectural treasures and create an extraordinary, immersive guest experience. Upon arrival, guests are drawn into the original three-story banking hall, where a dramatic central bar anchors the space. An illuminated whiskey decanter display is framed by historic carved wood medallions and velvet draperies, creating a striking focal point. Original teak wood paneling and six gilded lotus-blossom chandeliers provide a grand backdrop for the 250-seat restaurant, organized into three primary zones: bar lounge, main dining, and private dining rooms. Each private dining room is paired with its own pre-function area, the Library Lounge.
Inspired by the building’s Streamline Art Deco heritage, bespoke furniture in bold patterns and rich gemstone hues is layered with walnut millwork and accented by antique brass banker-wire screens. Original architectural details were preserved and celebrated, while new materials and elements were thoughtfully introduced. To address the challenge of the soaring volume, light-integrated screens and shelving elements were inserted to ground the space and create intimacy. Referencing the bank hall’s original floor pattern, the new flooring makes a bold graphic statement while subtly guiding circulation.
A commissioned gold mural depicting a banker and a mechanic spans the 33-foot ceiling, while a curated collection of artwork by local Minneapolis artists further anchors the space within its community.
