Microsoft Envisioning Center
Design Firm: Studio O + A
When a technology company has been hugely successful for decades the challenge is staying ahead of the curve. As one of the tech industry’s founding giants, our client knows its continuing prosperity depends on an ability to anticipate the impact innovative technologies will have on the future and how those innovations with change the way we live and work.
Our client employs a lot of people to think ahead, but conceptualization is only the first step of developing new products. A physical space dedicated to experiencing technology as it will be used in the office and home is an essential part of identifying new trends and assessing their viability. Our
client at the company’s campus in Redmond, Washington is that space.
Our firm’s remodel of the center focused on adaptability. Given the speed of change in the tech world, we believed a prototyping lab should be able to change shape as quickly as a prototyper changes focus. The modular stadium seating in this project may be reconfigured to meet the challenge of each day and to zero in, as necessary, on interactive walls, interactive desktops or the physical requirements of specific events.
The Next Generation Meeting Hexagon takes video conferencing to a new level with a structure that allows multi-dimensional interaction between in-person participants, off-site participants and live tech info walls. Like Hexagon, upright Microshelters distributed about the space allow solo workers acoustical privacy while maintaining visual connection to the rest of the office.
If the brightness of the space and playfulness of the shapes suggest a school science lab, that’s not an accident. Our design team wanted to create an environment that encouraged the unfettered thinking and passion for experimentation that animates a physics class or team of project-oriented biologists. Our client understands that the future will be an amalgamation of all the sciences and arts—and that it will be (or anyway should be) bright and playful.VOTE HERE
