This year’s Local Design Charrette (Regional Qualifier) was held on Saturday, February 8th, 2020 held at SmithGroup’s San Francisco office.  The program started at 7:30 with twenty-two interior design students from across the Bay Area. They were broken into 5 teams and given five hours to come up with a design solution for a problem receive that day.  This year the problem was located in Oakland’s historic Uptown district.

Judging the event were Dan Hogman with SmithGroup, Patrycja Dragan with Huntsman Architectural Group, and Stephanie Hughes with FCi.  Teams presented their results to the panel of judges who then deliberated and selected a winning team.

This year’s winning team included:

  • Vanessa Giraldo Ruiz – Canada College
  • Anvee Sheth – Academy of Art University
  • Carrie Benuska – UC Berkeley Extension
  • Jiawen Chen – Academy of Art University
  • Scarlett Zhang – California College of the Arts

The two alternates are:

  • Aishwarya Ghavat – Academy of Art University
  • Kristin Puccini – Canada College

The winning team will advance to the Western Region Student Design Charrette on April 4th, 2020.  This year the Regional event will be hosted by the Northern California Chapter in San Francisco.

Each year the IIDA Northern California Chapter (IIDANC) presents academic design awards. These awards are presented to interior design students who best address a topic of focus established by the Chapter.  Winners are determined by an independent jury. The intent is to honor student designers whose submissions represent a unique understanding of the chosen subject conceptually, verbally and graphically.
