Stanford Children’s Health Specialty Services
Design Firm: HOK
Stanford Children’s Health (SCH) Specialty Services is a tenant improvement of an 80,000 SF existing office building. This outpatient facility focuses on pediatric care, including adolescent health, behavioral medicine, urology, dermatology, pulmonary, orthopedics, imaging and physical therapy.
Primary goals of the project: •Provide a sophisticated environment that caters to both the pediatric population and their families. •Create a recognizable brand establishing SCH ambulatory care as a welcoming, modern, innovative provider with a distinctive, sophisticated look and feel. Create interactive moments that engage children, adolescents and adults and heighten the patient experience, building upon the existing SCH theme of “connection to nature.” •Provide an easily accessible Hub away from the congested academic / medical campus of Stanford University that promotes collaboration between specialties and integrate care delivery. Increase efficiency to allow more patients access to the highest quality of care.
Working from a program that co-locates various pediatric sub-specialties, the interior design starts with rigorous medical planning based on an open platform with standardized clinic modules and exam rooms. This flexibility enables use by the various specialties and the adjacency of diagnostics and treatment support spaces. The resulting efficiency has led to reduced wait times for appointments and the ability for a patient to access both exam and treatment in one location. The overall integrated care experience is further enriched with access to ancillary services such as social workers, nutritionists and on-site interpreters.
The character of the interior spaces sets the standard for all future SCH outpatient facilities. This facility provides a friendly, welcoming space to children of all ages and their families. Building on a sophisticated neutral palette that relates to Stanford’s current adult patient spaces, the colors and materials are meant to positively engage the visitors, alleviate the anxieties typical to pediatric patients, and create a branded look that is distinctive and unique to Stanford Healthcare.
The overall theme references the natural context of the surrounding bay area, including local plants and animals, and materials and forms one finds in rural and historic structures nearby. These elements are abstractly interpreted, and inspired the color palette of the land, sky and water, and elements such as the board walk flooring and the pebble-shaped alcoves.
The use of scale, form, pattern and texture creates interest, inspires curiosity, and provides playful moments of interaction with the environment. As the patients and families move through and experience the various spaces, there is a sense of discovery with each new element, whether it’s the playful red elephants or the
inviting orange bean bags in the waiting areas, the etched pebble pattern on the glass entry doors or the unexpected pop of color on the exam room cabinets. Each element provides a positive distraction, a new memory, and overall an enriched patient and family experience.
