The San Francisco City Center continued their summer tour series on July 12th with a tour of 826 Valencia’s Tenderloin Center, by Jonas Kellner, Gensler MK Think, INTERSTICE Architects, Office, BCCI Construction and BBDO San Francisco. This project won the 2017 Serve Merit Award. The tour was led by Janice Cavaliere from Gensler, Katy McNally from BCCI Construction, and Bita Nazarian and Byron Weiss from 826 Valencia.
826 Valencia is dedicated to supporting under-resourced students ages 6-18 with their writing skills, and to helping teachers get their students excited about the literary arts. The Tenderloin Center is its second writing and tutoring center, with its flagship location on Valencia Street.
Janice, Katy, Bita and Byron walked us through the project, showing us before photos of the dilapidated condition that the building was in when they started construction, and telling us the story behind every detail of what is now a delightfully whimsical space. It was evident that this was a labor of love for everyone involved. And even us adults enjoyed opening all of the doors in the storefront and crawling through the indoor treehouse!
We would like to thank everyone who was able to join us, with a special thank you to 826 Valencia for hosting and helping us organize the event, to Janice Cavaliere and Katy McNally for helping lead the tour, and to our sponsor Emser Tile for the treats!
We also encourage you to support this wonderful organization!
We hope you will join us for our other tours this summer! Register at http://iidanc.eventbrite.com
